3d reconstruction in Byblos

2019

As a member of the Archaecopter project, I was able to conduct a one-week training course in Beirut.
The students should learn to create their own 3D models of cultural assets. They took pictures on the conventional way, but also used a Phantom 4 DJI.
The students were shown which criteria are important for the image acquisition to create solid 3D models.
The basic principles of Structure from Motion were explained as a theoretical part. Meshlab, Meshroom and Blender were presented for this purpose.

On a trip to Byblos, videos were taken with the drones and pictures were taken with the cameras on the ground.

Meshroom was used to process the raw data. Meshroom’s internal pipeline could then be adjusted. The result was cleaned with Meshlab. At the end, other possibilities were shown what could be done with the 3D models. A direct connection can be established between Meshroom and Blender. Camera movements can then be created in Blender, for example.

Created 3D model of a building in Byblos.
